Our beloved CyberSN Cybersecurity Career Center has new features, and I am so excited about how useful it has become for our community.
For years, the Career Center has been one of the ways CyberSN gives back to cybersecurity professionals. The goal has always been simple: make cybersecurity careers easier to understand, navigate, and grow within.
That sounds straightforward, but anyone who has worked in cybersecurity knows it isn't.
Job titles are inconsistent. The same title can mean very different things from one organization to another, while two completely different titles can represent nearly identical work.
That is why CyberSN has always focused on something more meaningful than titles:
The work itself.
Tasks and Responsibilities Give Us a Common Language
Cybersecurity careers make much more sense when we understand the tasks and responsibilities behind them.
What work is actually being performed?
What capabilities does that work support?
What skills and tools are needed?
What other roles use similar capabilities?
Where can someone go next in their career?
These are much more useful questions than simply asking, "What is your title?"
Our CyberSN Taxonomy was built around this philosophy, and the Career Center now makes that information even more accessible to the cybersecurity community.
Explore Cybersecurity Roles by the Work, Not the Title
The Career Center organizes cybersecurity functional roles across 10 capability categories around the actual work being performed.
Professionals can explore roles across different areas of cybersecurity and better understand where their current experience fits, and where it might take them next.
The Career Center also allows users to search and filter roles by career stage, from early career through leadership, as well as by cybersecurity capability area.
This is especially important in an industry where career paths are rarely linear.
Your next role may not simply be the job title directly above your current one. Your existing tasks, responsibilities, skills, and capabilities may make you a strong fit for several different career paths.
Now, professionals can see those connections more clearly.
Go Much Deeper Into Every Role
Each functional role includes detailed information designed to help professionals understand both the job and the career opportunities surrounding it.
Depending on the role, professionals can explore:
- Tasks and responsibilities
- Salary ranges
- Alternate job titles
- Common tools and technologies
- Relevant certifications
- Career pathways
- Roles that can lead into the position
- Roles the position can lead to
- Adjacent roles with overlapping capabilities
- Common career questions
- Open positions connected to the work
That means someone doesn't have to rely on a job title alone to decide whether a role fits their background or interests.
They can look at the work.
Career Development Shouldn't Require Guessing
One of the biggest challenges I have seen throughout my career is how difficult we have made career navigation.
Professionals are constantly trying to answer questions like:
- What should I learn next?
- Am I qualified for this role?
- What other jobs could I do with the experience I already have?
- Do I need another certification?
- What does this title actually mean?
- How do I move from where I am today to where I want to be?
The better we become at defining work at the task and responsibility level, the easier it becomes to answer those questions.
And as AI continues to change how work is performed, I believe understanding work at this level will only become more important.
Titles will continue to change.
Technology will continue to change.
Tasks will evolve, move, disappear, and emerge.
Understanding the actual work gives professionals a much stronger foundation for navigating that change.
More Than Role Information
The Career Center also includes additional resources for the cybersecurity community, including resources for women in cybersecurity and military veterans, along with events, videos and podcasts, blogs, and other career and educational content.
Whether someone is exploring cybersecurity for the first time, actively looking for a new opportunity, developing new capabilities, or thinking about the next stage of their career, our goal is to provide information they can actually use.
Free and Public for the Cybersecurity Community
This part is important to me.
The CyberSN Cybersecurity Career Center is free and public.
You do not have to be looking for a job through CyberSN to use it.
You do not have to be a CyberSN client.
It exists as a resource for the cybersecurity community.
After more than a decade of working to improve how cybersecurity talent and organizations find one another, I remain deeply passionate about creating transparency around the work itself.
Because when we have a common language for tasks, responsibilities, capabilities, and roles, we can make better career decisions, build stronger teams, and create a healthier cybersecurity workforce ecosystem.
I hope you explore the newly enhanced CyberSN Cybersecurity Career Center, use it, and share it with someone who could benefit from it.
